Occasionally I take Sierra for a walk in O'Neill Park. Unlike Caspers, dogs are allowed in O'Neill although not on the wilderness trails which are the only ones I'm really interested in. Anyway, sometimes we get caught out a little late on full moon nights. Coincidently, this is when I prefer to photograph, at least in the park.
These photos were shot along the paved access road which parallels Live Oak Canyon Road.
And tragically...
We've been spending a few days in Palm Desert. Since we are here during a full moon, it only makes sense to head out for some night photography. I headed out to old Highway 66 via Joshua Tree National Park Sunday night. I timed it well to watch the moonrise from the Cholla Garden in JTNP, get a few photos and then head north to check out the old roadside structures in Amboy, Chambless and Essex.
Here's a couple of night shots of the old cafe in Essex a few miles south of I-40. Based on a 1936 photo of the building in the book Images of America: Route 66 in California it appears it was built not too long after the realignment of U.S. 66 in 1931.
Below is an old building across the street from the cafe. Note the Ocotillo at the left of the photo. After Essex, I headed back to photograph Chambless and Amboy which I'll post soon.
